Urinetown, The Musical, is a high-octane comic and cautionary tale which explores greed, corruption, love, as well as revolution, and is thought by many—critics and general public alike—to possess one of the worst titles in musical theatre history. Well, you can’t have everything! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, this Tony-winning musical imagines a Gotham-like city where, after 20 years of drought, water and “water-closets” are controlled by corporations which employ the police to enforce the rules. Amid the people, however, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Not only does Urinetown, The Musical offer a whip-smart look at a future in which water is worth its weight in gold, but it is filled with songs that honor and spoof the history of musical theatre. How many Broadway shows will you recognize along the way? Proving we are not old and stuffy, please join the Abbey Players for the spring musical of our 70th season on campus!
